THE BODY TYPE : PEAR

The classic Pear has small boobs, long waist, flat tummy, great arms, saddlebags and heavy legs. The shape has a rather unfair negative image, when in fact, this body shape has lots of advantages. There is often the idea that Pears are overweight, but it doesn't mean one have to be chubby because the bottom half is bigger than the rest.
Pears have a lot of the good stuff going on. Just look at all these famous pear shaped women, strutting their stuff, and being proud of their "big" bottom.
To sum it up, you have the same body type as Beyonce, need I say no more?

The most important guidelines.
- It's terribly hard to find something that's unflattering on Beyonce, that said, I found some things. To no surprise at all it is the worst enemy of the Pear shape, the jodhpur, harem and cropped pants. Wide-legged trousers with a flat front, or firm normal-waist jeans are a much better match for the Pear figure.
- If you have very wobbly legs, then best not to wear shorts and mini skirts. High heals and some firming pantyhose might help a little though.
- Ankle strap ballerinas in a dark color is really unflattering for your curvy legs. Skin colored, chunky, straight heels with platform does your legs justice.
- With the Pear shape, Its just a question of balancing everything below the waist. Wear big earrings and necklaces, flashy tops, puff sleeves and layering.

Just keep the focus on your lovely slim top and love the junk in your trunk.

NEVER WEAR:
Bias-cut skirts.
Be careful with short skirts and pencil skirts.
Jodhpurs.
Harem pants.
Tight cut jeans with heavy pattern and shiny fabric. Be careful with light and bright colors.
Ankle strap heels.
Ankle strap ballerinas.
Stilettos.

Other Pears: Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira.
There are just so many fabulous pears that I had to use them all, and hopefully it will make up for the body shape's bad reputation.

Hi, I was wondering what body type I am?

Shoulders: 41
Bust:38
Waist: 31
Hips:41
I thought I was a pear due to my butt being medium to large. I think I might be an hour glass? The only thing is I have a stomach. The pictures in the hour glass section doesn't have a stomach that sticks out. I also have big thighs. but my hips seems to be normal sized.
Can you please help me to determine what body shape I am?

Hi, Nafi :-) If you want you can send me some photos of you on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com. It is usually easier to determine the shape visually.

From your information, it could be that you are a Skittle, Hourglass, Vase and a Cello.
Are you calves and lower legs heavy or more slender or balanced compared to your body? Are your shoulders and back broad, narrow or slender? Maybe slender but still matching hips? Is your waist long og short, is it dramatic and tiny or stretched and curved? Is it straighter and slightly curved, or not curved at all?

A skittle can have a hard time deciding if they are slim or curvy, because they're both. They know they are bottom heavy, and might have considered themselves as being a pear shape, but don't have the saddlebags and the big bum.
The Skittle is characterized by a long slender upper body which gets wider at the middle, and carry most of their weight around the thighs. The top half is in good proportion, but you've probably had some issues with finding clothes that flatter your lower half over the years. The shape is characterized by average boobs, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs and chunky calves.
Some skittles have shoulders same as hips in width, but is still heavier on the bottom because they have slender shoulders and chest and have curves from below the waist. They can also have more of a stomach than a pear shape, especially if they gain weight or don't work out. They will basically have a harder time keeping it slender from the waist and down. A skinny skittle will still be curvy below the waist even if they are skinny on top. It's just the way they are built. You could say they are elegant on the top, and curvalicious on the bottom.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-skittle

The Vase is a stretched out Hourglass, and can have a belly too, but then again, so can the Hourglass. What makes the Vase and Hourglass so curvy, is that no matter the size, they will always have a waist that appears small compared to the rest of their body. They will have full chest, hips and buts, and even the really skinny ones will at least have the curvy shape. They will have curvy legs that are less heavy than the bottom heavy types, such as The Skittle, Pear and Bell, or even the straight figured Brick. But they can definitely have a belly that sticks out. They will just have a slender waist combined with it, and the same goes for the Skittle.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-vase
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-shape-hourglass

If you have a large bum and a large chest, I would guess you could be a Cello. A type of hourglass that has less of a small waistline, but more of a difference between hips, chest and waist, and more prone to have a belly. The Cello is the boldest of the hourglass types, and is very close to an Hourglass as they are both women with fabulous curves. The Cello waist is also short but not as small, and the figure is on the fuller end of the scale. They might feel a little pear shaped because of their big bottom, but the broad shoulders and big boobs balance it out.
The Cello have large boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, broad shoulders and slim lower legs.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-cello

The Pear is more dramatic than the Skittle and will usually have a flat stomach and slender arms. This type doesn't get a belly as easily as some other types, but they can if they gain enough weight, have had children, or simlply don't exercise. The belly thing is more of a comparison to the rest of your body. And it might be more of a slanted angle outwards than a round belly on the bottom heavy types.
I'm a Skittle myself, and whenever I gain weight or water weight, I will usually get more of a lower tummy that sticks out a little. I'ts easier for me to not get a big belly, but I don't have a perfectly flat one either. I also have some love handles on my hip bones which will also increase when I gain some. The only thing that never become skinny is my thighs and my upper body will stay slender for longer, but I have been chubby allover before. It's just more of a fuller figured skittle figure. Same shape, just more of me, allover :-)

I hope some of this information answered your question. I think if you feel like you might be an Hourglass, than I would consider the Hourglass, Cello and Vase first. You know your body best.
If you need more help, just send me an e-mail with some photos or give me more information, and I will help you determine you body type :-)

Hi, Harriet :-)
It sounds like you have a balanced figure, and a bottom heavy will usually feel like their ankles aren't that thin, but it' doesn't cancel out a pear shape.
If you want you can send me some photos of you on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com. It is usually easier to determine the shape visually.

But, from what you a writing, I would say you sound like you are a Column (or maybe even a Cornet.. a little chance), but because you mention saddlebags, I would check out the Skittle too. The Skittle is usually a little less dramatic than a Pear and it also has a long torso, and usually longer legs than a Pear.
The Skittle is characterized by a long slender upper body which gets wider at the middle, and despite their long legs, carry most of their weight around the thighs. They have average boobs, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs and chunky calves.

Check it out, and feel free to ask if you need more help.

Hi, Elena :-) Your measurements doesn't sound fat to me. You seem to have a lovely curved figure with a small waist, good chest, and a bootie :-) Size doesn't matter, only shape does and knowing how to dress it.
I really hope figuring out your body type and learning how to compliment your figure the right way will help you on your way to start becoming friends with your body. Skinny or fat doesn't matter, both looks have their perks. Either if it's being delicate and elegant, or curvy, ultra feminin and all woman. Filling out your bra in all the right places, or being able to run without boob problems... It's equally attractive. Different looks, but equally great.
So, don't feel inferior about your body because some a-holes in the 20th century decided they wanted to sell more beauty products and started what we now know as body shaming. The Beauty Ideal has changed several times throughout the decades and it proves that it's more about trend than one body type being better than the other, or one size better than others.
You can see what I mean here, in the link below. (Body Image and Beauty Ideal over the decades, in particular)
http://www.idealiststyle.com/body-image.html
(This one below, is for additional images from the different decades)
http://www.idealiststyle.com/fashion-trend.html

Other than that, I can say that your bust and hips seem pretty similar in size, so that could mean that you could be a Cello as well. They also have a pear like shape to them, only with a large chest and a short waist.
Is your waist long, and is your chest small or large? Are your lower legs heavy or slender compared to thighs? Is your stomach flat, medium og do you have a belly? Are your arms slender or do you have a little extra there? These questions are important in determining your shape. I would say, that just from your measurements, I would think you could be a curvy figure such as Vase og Cello, maybe not dramatic enough for an Hourglass. Or that you are a bottom heavy such as, Pear, Skittle or Bell.
Your hips being wider than shoulders point towards Pear types/bottom heavy, but chest to hips ratio could mean curvy (hourglass sister groups). I would look at the Pear, Skittle, Bell, Cello and maybe even Vase, and see. I wish I could give you an answer from only measurements, but there are still some missing information to draw an accurate conclusion.

If you want you can send me some photos of you on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com. It is usually easier to determine the shape visually. Or try to write me some more info on your shape to help narrow it down.

Check it out, and let me know if you want more help. And then we can get to the swim suits when we have all the facts.

Hello
Could you please help me? :) I can't decide if I'm a pear or a skittle. I'm quite fit and skinny, but my bottom part is definitely wider and I'm not without shapes. I have small boobs, flat tummy (since I work out) and no saddlebags. However, if I gained wight, I might get saddlebags, since that's the part of me that are the widest but I have never been overwight so I don't know. How do I decide which shape I am? Am I a fit pear or am I a skittle with small boobs and flat tummy?

thank you in advance!

Hi, Liv. From you description, it does sound like a typical Skittle/Pear dilemma.

The Skittle is characterized by a long slender upper body which gets wider at the middle, and despite their long legs, carry most of their weight around the thighs. They have average boobs, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs and chunky calves.

The classic Pear has small boobs, long waist, flat tummy, great arms, saddlebags and heavy legs.

Here's an overview of all the body types. There is two post about each of them. One about what works and what doesn't, and one about all the best looks. http://www.idealiststyle.com/the-body-types.html

Which one of these body type description do you feel fits you best? I can't tell for sure from just your description, because it's more of a overall look and distribution issue, between these two types. It does sound a little bit more like a PEAR, but that's because of the flat tummy, small boobs, and the fact that your saddlebag area is still the widest. With the Skittle, it's more of a thigh situation.
If you still need more help to figure it out, you can send me some full figure photos, in for example leggings and a tank top, and I can help you figure it out. idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com

I took one of those online body shape calculators and it said that I had a pear shaped body. But my breast are not small and my waist is short not long but my bottom is big. I think that I a cross between a pear and a cello. Here are my measurements 34 shoulders 41.5 bust 36 waist 46 hips oh and my stomach is not flat at all

Hi, Theresa. From your description, it sounds to me like you're either a Cello (The Pear shape of the Hourglass family), or a Bell (A Pear shape with a short waist and less of a flat tummy)

The Cello is all woman and the defining features are big boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, broad shoulders and slim lower legs.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-cellohttp://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-cello-your-best-looks

The very feminine Bell has small shoulders, small boobs, small and short waist, big thighs and a large bottom.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-bell
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-bell-your-best-looks

Are your shoulders broad compared to your body (I don't know your height, so hard to tell from the measurements. I'm guessing it's Inches.) If yes, and that your lower legs are slender compared to your figure, I would say Cello. Especially, if your figure is more balanced and curvy than bottom heavy with a less curvy top half. A Cello will also fit with the not flat stomach.

If your shoulders are narrow/petite, and your lower legs are heavy/full figured, and it's a typical bottom heavy balance, I would say you're a Bell.

You could be a mix, it is possible. But, it's also common for Cello body types, to think they are a Hourglass/Pear mix. That just means you're a Cello usually. It all comes down to which style of clothes, shoes, and accessories that suit you best. If still in doubt, try on the different styles of clothes to see which ones feel better, or send me an e-mail with some full figure photos in for example leggings and a tank top that shows of your shape. :-) idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com

I hope this helped.

Hi! Don't know If you read the post too, since you said "they"? Only one person is showing yes and no outfits, Beyonce. The other ones are just to show more examples of the Pear body type. Also, I do mention that it is terribly hard to find anything that looks bad on Beyonce. So, nothing is really bad on her, it just doesn't bring out the "best" in her body from a body type perspective. You could say only "no" outfits could even come close to not bringing out the best in her, as "yes" clothes and everything in between works perfectly for her. If you look at it from a fashion perspective, your body shape doesnt matter and only self-expression does. In fashion, it's not about showing of or shaping your body, but creating a look. So, I guess you could say that there is no such thing as wrong styles and shapes in fashion. It's all trends that come and go. But, from a balancing your body type perspective, there are some rights and wrongs. It's really about giving people the tools to take control over the clothes and shape their bodies. That way people can know what what kind of style Will do with what kind of body type. For example, pencil skirts are traditionally a big "No" for a pear shape, but That's only because buts were supposed to be small when that rule was made. So, personally, I think pencils skirts are great on Pear shapes. Yes and No, might sound dramatic, but it just means that that "Yes" is the best styles to enhance a pear shape, and "no" is the least flattering styles. Or in other words, the styles that Will hide the figure or make it more extreme. So, it can really be a taste thing too. However, most people tend to feel their best, in their "Yes" clothes. On the other side, Beyonce could wear a plastic bag and look good, so I understand your confusion. It would have been better to use a less "can wear anything" pear shape, but I had to use someone where I had access to enough photos to find the clothes I needed to show, on them. So, in a perfect world, I should have done my own photo shoots, but then I couldn't have made this a free page. On us mear mortals that aren't Beyonce and her Hollywood kind, the no outfits would be more obvious. Luckily, more women in all kinds of sizes and shapes are considered models these days, so the chance of finding someone That's more relatable wearing these "Yes and no" clothes, is getting bigger by the minute. Natural models were not as big a thing yet when I wrote this, so the options of representation was a bit more narrow :-)
It's been some years since I wrote these, so when I have the time, I Will go back and specific these things in all the body types posts. My goal is that every kind of body type and size Will have representation on my page.
Hope this cleared some things up for you.
Have a great summer.

Best regards, Sun.

Hi,I'm pretty small and just started gaining weight recently. My shoulders are 36in, bust 32in,waist 24in, and hip 36in. I know I'm not a rectangle, because my waist is small, compared to my hip. Sometimes I think I'm an inverted triangle, but then my shoulders are sloppy. I doubt I'm an hour glass either because I have a low hip. Shoulders - 39in
Breast - 35in
Waist - 25in
Hips - 39in
Ive got saddlebags and a flat stomach, so Im not sure, it could be pear or hourglass I reckon - I have really teeny tiny wrists, ankles, and everything, I really only have fat in my bum, thighs (nice and disproportional lol!) and maybe a tiny bit in my upper arms. Im also 5'3, What do you think?
Thank you!

Hi, Katy! What you are describing does sound a lot like a Pear, but also a little bit like your top might be to proportionate to your bottom. A Pear will have a long waist though, and an Hourglass has a short waist. From what you’re describing, I would also check out the Skittle, and since yoy say your ankles are also small which is not typical for the Skittle and Pear, also check out the Vase and Cello. Vase and Skittle has a long torso, Cello has a short waist like the Hourglass.

I hope this helped!

Hi, I’d love some help identifying my type/s please!

My measurements are:

37” shoulder (measured all the way around top of back) but aren’t very broad and look fairly balanced with hips/butt
34” chest
27” waist
35” hip

I’m slim with small wrists and ankles and skinny calves, my rise is long (11” to navel) and my hips are high with hip dips which makes dressing this area hard. I gain weight equally on stomach, thighs, belly, butt and upper arms.

If I wear shapeless tops or voluminous shirts I can look top heavy due to skinny calves and short legged even though my legs are slightly longer than top half.

Hi, Louise! It actually sounds like you're a Vase from your description. Check it out, and let me know if it's not a fit and we'll digg a little deeper. A Bottom heave body type will usually have heave lower legs, so curvy types sounds the most likely. But a Column, Goblet, Skittle, and Cello can also be an option. Most likely Vase, but it depends on the overall look of the bod.

I hope this helped.

Hi, Cat! It sounds like you're either a very slender Hourglass, but probably more likely a Vase. Geena Davis has a small chest when she was young and she's a Vase. I'm basing this off that I think you might have a long waist since you're looking at the Pear body type. Also, the Cello can be a good possibility. Depends on your waist length and thighs and lower legs.
Other than that I think the Skittle, Bell, or Pear also might be a possible fit. But from what you're describing it sounds like your lower legs and legs are too slender for that, as those are bottom heavy body types.

I hope this helped!

Hi, Lika! From what you're describing it sounds like you're most likely a Skittle or Pear. However, you could also be a Bell, Cello, Hourglass or Vase. The fact that you have small ankles and a somewhat balanced curve is more Hourglass, Vase, and Cello. The long torso with the description is more Pear, Vase, and Skittle. However, the bottom heavy types like Skittle, Bell and Pear, usually have heavier ankles/calves. So if you have long legs too, or slender calves compared to thighs, that could mean Vase or Cello. So, those are the types I think of when I read your description. It just depends on the final details and total sum/overall look of your figure.

I hope this helped!

Hi, Lika! From what you're describing, it sounds the most like you're a Pear, Skittle, or even a Vase. Given the fact that you say you have a long torso, and big bottom, flat stomach, and so on. The small anklescombines with this is why maybe cheking out the Vase too could be helpful.
Other than that I would say that a Skittle or Pear sounds the most likey.

Hi, Dina! From what you're describing, it sounds like you could be a Pear, Skittle, Bell, or Cello. The fact that you say you gain weight on your legs, makes it seem like it's all of the leg, which means also the lower legs. And that's typical for the bottom heavy body types. Can also be true for the Hourglass and Brick too, and sometimes Cello. Your measurements makes it seem like your shoulders are the widest part, but that you still have a slimmer upper body. That points more to a Cello or Skittle. Also, your dramatic curve makes Brick less likely. You could still be a Pear, but they usually don't have shoulders wider than hips. However, it is possible. The length of your torso, like waist length, and it upper body or legs are the longest is an important factor too. So look at the types I've mentioned and add that to the equation too, and that should help you see more clearly which type is the best fit for you.
I think you sound the most like a Skittle or a Cello, but check out the others too to be sure as I haven't seen what the measurements look like on you :-).

I hope this helped!

Hi, Maria! From what you're describing, it sounds like you could be a Pear, Skittle, Bell, Hourglass, Vase, or Cello. To know for sure which typer you are, you need to look at where for example your weight is distributed on your other body parts too. Are your legs, but, and hips, the part with the most curve? Or is it you chest, arms, or maybe your tummy? Or maybe it is all of the above? Lower body curvy points to bottom heavy body types, and both upper and lower body, but with visible curve, points to curvy types like hourglass and similar, and only or mostly upper body curve points to top heavy. The length of your torso, like waist length, and if the upper body or legs are the longest, is also an important factor. So look at the types I've mentioned and add that to the equation too, and that should help you see more clearly which type is the best fit for you.
The fact that you have thought you're a Pear makes it the most likely that you're either a Pear, Skittle, or Bell, or maybe even a Cello. Hourglass and Pear are the most famous if the types, so often when people are confused about their type, and have your measurements and similar. They're often a Vase, Cello, Skittle, or Bell. But check out the others I've mentioned too, to be sure as I haven't seen what these measurements look like on you and the rest of the factors :-).

I hope this helped!

Hey. Im bot sure if you are still reading comments, but if you are, would you have any idea what type I am?

Shoulders: 41 in
Bust: 38 in
Waist: 33 in
High hip: 38 in
Hips: 42.5 in

Whenever I use body type calculators they either say that I'm a bottom hourglass, pear, or inverted triangle. When I look straight in the mirror, my shoulders seem to be slightly wider than my hips; and when I turn to the side in the mirror, my butt sticks out farther than anything else.
I have a long torso and short legs. I noticed that as I lose weight, I tend to keep fat in my upper arms, lower ab area, and thighs, but not so much my butt or waist. My butt is a medium size though, its not flat, but its not huge either. Most people say that I have thick thighs and calves, and my breasts are either A or B cup depending on the brand.

Hi, Christine!

From what you're describing you could be a Pear, Cello, Skittle, Hourglass, Bell, Brick or Vase.

I would say that most likely would be Skittle or Cello. Or maybe even a Brick, as there is such a thing as a soft brick ( like Eva Longoria or Jennifer Hudson). That's a Brick that kind of seems like an houglass or Pear, and looks can wear both brick and houglass type of clothes. It's still mostly a brick though, but is just more balanced and almost flowing into another type. This can happen with many body types, but I have seen it the most for the Brick.

So I would start by looking at the Cello, then the Skittle and brick, and the others I've mentioned after that if the first ones don't fit either.

I hope this hepled!

Hi, Apeksya! From what you're describing it sounds like you could be a a bottom heavy body type from the small shoulder measurements compared to the rest, or a curvy type because of the chest, hip, and waist measurements.

To inlcude all of the options, I would say that a Pear, Skittle, Bell, Vase, Cello and Hourglass could be possible.
Your chest compared to everything else says Skittle, Cello, Vase, and Hourglass. And your shoulders combined with everything says Bell, Pear, Skittle and Hourglass.
So Hourglass and Skittle comes up twice, and fits both with somewhat balanced curves and not wide shoulders.
Cello and Vase often have wider shoulders, and Pear usually have a small chest.

Without knowing if you have a long or short waist, or if your upper or lower body is the longest, and if you have the most curve on your upper body like more arm and chest body fat, or on your lower body like hip, but, thighs, and calves curve. It's hard to know which of the ones I mentioned that seems like the best fit.

I would start looking through the options I mentioned and add those new elements to your equation, and then it should be easier to figure out which of these types that are the most like you.

I hope this helped!

Hi again, Apekshya! If by spoon, you mean Pear, as that sounds like a similar shape. I would say that the Pear, but also kind of Hourglass, and with balanced measurements, short waist, and broad shoulders. It sounds a lot like you're a Cello. It is very typical that Cello body types feel like they're a mix between those two types.

The other option could be a Brick, but a Soft Brick, as they are also balanced and seem to look Hourglass or Pear like too. Except that they're not as boldly curved as they seem. Jennifer Hudson and Eva Longoria are perfect examples of Soft Bricks.

If not those, I think Skittle could also be a good fit. As it has to be somewhat balanced body type, with a curve like look, and not very narrow shoulders or small chests. Goblet and similar, would also not feel like they might be a Pear, so I think that can be ruled out.

I hope that helped!

hi! thanks this is extremely helpful. I was just wondering, what do you think is Dua Lipa's body type? I've noticed that I have the same body type as her (I'm just a bit shorter), and would you consider her a skittle or a pear?

Here's an instagram post for reference (swipe to see the second pic):

Hi, I don’t know if I’m a Pear or Bell
Shoulders: 35in
Bust: 32in
Waist: 26in (I gained a bit but I wanna lose it soon)
Hips:37

I’m short/balanced waisted (scoliosis), 5’7, my arms aren’t that great (they’re a bit fat). But I don’t think I’m a bell becuz I don’t think I look very bottom heavy. People look at me and think I’m a rectangle and skinny when I have baggy tops with skinny jeans on.

Hello! I've always been unsure of my body type. I know I'm bottom heavy, with wide hips and full thighs, but I have a smaller bust, broad shoulders, and a fairly defined waist. The upper body is slimmer (but not toned) while the bottom half is quite fleshy (also not toned). From the front I look quite broad, and from the side I look more slim and flat chested. Also, I'm 5'10" and 150 lbs. My measurements are:
Shoulders - 18 inches across
Bust - 34.5 in. (The boobs are more wide and flat)
Underbust - 31 in.
Waist - 28 in. (A little long waisted? Maybe balanced?)
Hips - 42 in. (Wider than shoulders, saddlebags, some booty)
Thighs - 25 inches around each
