THE BODY TYPE : LOLLIPOP

Countless A-list celebrities are classic Lollipops, and Angelina Jolie is a perfect example. The defining features of the Lollipop are large but not heavy boobs, slim hips, proportionally small waist and long elegant legs. Lollipops don’t have to work as hard as other body types to look good, but being this shape is certainly not without it's challenges.
One being that there is virtually no clothing made with the Lollipop shape in mind (60% of the Worlds female population are Pear-shaped).

The most important guidelines.
- Lollipops should focus on styles that balance the proportions, such as to broaden the shoulders and hips a little to smooth that often too top heavy look.
-Deep and wide V-necks and scoop necklines are great for enhancing your assets. Halter-neck and sweetheart necklines that offers good support are also good choices.
- Avoid chunky sweaters and shift dresses that hangs straight down from the boobs.
- Elaborate necklaces will make the chest look even larger, and the same goes for bolero jackets.
- Anything chunky, loose, or too covering on the bosom, will make the shape look disproportionate and create an extreme version of the figure.
- Wide-leg pants hide those fabulous legs and make them look like sticks.
- Bell-bottom pants, fluted skirts, details on the hip, and ballon-sleeves helps to create curves in the areas that have less.
- The absolut worst look for Lollipops is high-waisted pants of any style paired up with a turtleneck.

You lucky Lollipops can get great results without too much effort, so enjoy!

Hi thanks a lot for this article (even though it's a bit old). I had a question for you. I'm a 5'3" Short waisted lollipop/ inverted triangle with a bit of a tummy and big boobs. Will high waisted flare skirts look good on me? I'm looking for skirts that will give me some waist definition and make my hips seem curvier. Thanks!

Hi, Anon :-) Sorry for the late answer. You're comment must have slipped by me. Better late than never, I hope. So, if you're still wondering, here's my answer.
The inverted triangle reference combined with big boobs, lead me to believe that you might be a Goblet.
The Goblet has a top heavy shape similar to the Cornet and Lollipop in many ways, but there are some differences. They have broad shoulders and a wide back, big boobs, not much of a waist, narrow hips, often a bit of a tummy and long legs.
The most important rule is to accentuate the positive which is those lovely long legs and good bust line.

http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-goblet

http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-goblet-your-best-looks

The most important guidelines for the Goblet:.
- Anything square, chunky, to covering, or loose will make your figure look disproportionate and create an extreme version of the figure.
- Make sure to accentuate the space under your breast with a belt or something tightly fit, so your breast don't look saggy.
- Empire-line cuts, panelled skirts in a heavy fabric, or folded material will help cover the tummy for those who have it.
- Short skirts and high heels show those lovely long legs.
- Fluted skirts and ballon-sleeves helps you create curves in the areas that have less.
- Belts and pattern will help you break up and separate the different body elements for the curves to show through.
- Don’t be afraid to invest in some good shape-wear to smooth any lumps and further enhance your shape.
- Also make sure to have a great bras to keep those boobs up and away from your waist.

The most important guidelines for the Lollipop:
-Focus on styles that balance the proportions, such as to broaden the shoulders and hips a little to smooth that often too top heavy look.

So, yeah. High waisted skirts are good for both Lollipops and Goblets. A flare directly from the high waistline will cover your nice thighs, and make your top half look heavy and legs thin and unbalanced. It might look ok if you are a more balanced top heavy, but it won't be a perfect fit. So make sure the flare starts after your hips. Pencil skirts and flared below hips create that curvy lower body look. Also having tops that are fitted directly under the boobs will help the waist definition a lot.

For the Lollipop the fluted skirts look the best, because the curve and shape of the skirt adds curves on the hips, while still hugging the right places. But, pencil skirts are good too. Just make sure you pair it with a flattering top (empire line is great for a little bit of tummy, but not extra material, so keep it fitted but not tight if you feel uncomfortable with the tummy.... Although, I think a little tummy looks really feminine, and the boobs will balance the look as long as the cut of the top is correct and the skirts fits right).

For the Goblet, the best skirt is a panelled skirt in heavy fabric, which will balance the weight of the upper body. Also, the heavy fabric is great for holding in a rounded tummy and skims the figure. Horizontal paneling is even more forgiving.
A Tight skirt with fluted hemline is also great, because a skirt that is fitted at the top enhances those long legs, and the fluted hemline balance the larger top half.
Remember to show of the fabulous Goblet/Lollipop legs.

I would try these types of skirts, and see which ones feel's right.
(Pencil, fluted, and panneled skirts).

Hi, I'm looking for prom dresses and I have a lollipop body shape. I'm 5'6 and there is a dress code, and it will also be March in GA. I get hot easily so I want to be cool but also within dress code, but at the same time show off my assets, which are my chest and legs. Thank you!

Hi, Rachel. I hope the post's about the body types helped you with finding a suitable prom dress. I'm not sure if there was a question in there for me? If so, don't be afraid to ask again.
I really hope you have an amazing prom with lots of fun, and find that perfect dress.

I wish you all the best :-)

Hi!
I love your blog but I have always struggled by pinning myself down to one body shape. I am either lollipop or hourglass, but I am never sure.
My height is 5'3 and I am a 36-24-35. I hope you can help me find a particular body shape style accordingly.
Thanks!

Hi, Riona :-) Thank you so much for the lovely feedback.

It's quite common to struggle with figuring out exactly which body type you have, as no one is exactly the same. The most important thing is to figure out what your dominating features are, the ones that dictate the way you need to dress them. What works on your figure and what doesn't, in other words.

From your measurements, it sounds like you have a small waist, and compared to height and waist, like you have somewhat large breast and an balanced bottom half size.

I would try to figure out if your waist is long or short, because there are three types of hourglass shapes. There is the classic Hourglass, with a short and small waist, large bust and large bottom with nicely curved legs with full thighs. Then there is the Cello, with big boobs, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, slim lower legs, broad shoulders and a short waist, not a small waist. This type has a very bold figure, so it doesn't sound like someone who might bend towards a lollipop.
Last but not least, there is the Vase, with a longer and gently curved waistline, slender and nicely curved legs, they also have a full bust and bottom, but it's on the less extreme side. It's the stretched and less dramatic hourglass and the bottom is less round and full. This could easily be your type, since you feel like your are flowing towards the top heavy.

The curvy Vase is normally fuller in figure, and the lollipop is usually slender with boobs that don't look heavy. The Lollipop and Goblet (The chesty and top heavy types), don't have much of a waist (not a dramatic one at least, but they might have a slightly curved waist) and a smaller bottom paired with long and slender legs. If they gain weight, they will gain most of it on their top half, while the hourglass types will still have a small waist/ be smaller in the middle than their boobs and but.

If you feel on the balanced side, you are most likely not top heavy. But, I have seen people who think they are a lollipop or an hourglass, that turned out to be a Brick with boobs and but, or that turned out to be Goblets too. So my advice is to browse through all these types to be sure (The Vase, Hourglass, Lollipop, Goblet, and Brick).

http://www.idealiststyle.com/the-body-types.html

But from your information, it does sound like you could be a Vase.

Hey! Thanks for the advice!
I do seem like a vase but rather on the smaller spectrum because of the height. Which does make me a bit fuller and yes I even have chunky upper arms like other Vase body types. I gain weight usually all over proportionally except the waist but i do also have slightly slimmer legs.
I have a small waist but not really a short one.
And my body looks balanced yet curvy making my boobs the best asset.

Hi! Thank you for your wonderful blog and article on body types. I'm struggling to find out which exact one I am. I believe I'm a short lolipop - is that possible? I'm 5 ft 4 - very narrow shoulders/back and large chest (30F). I have a short and small waist but not exaggerated like classic hourglasses and very skiny legs (especially my calves) . If I gain weight it goes directly to my lower stomach and face – although for now my stomach is flat. My exact measurements are 36- 28- 38.

Hi, Cameron. Thank you so much for that lovely feedback :-)
It is absolutely possible to be a petit Lollipop, as with any body type. The proportions are what matter in defining your body shape. Non dominating shoulders is a Lollipop feature as the Goblet is the Lollipop type with a broad back and shoulders. If you are narrow with somewhat large breasts that don't appear very heavy, it is a good indicator of being a Lollipop, and your bra size confirms that.
Most body types have waistlines, just in different terms of how dramatic. A Lollipop will have a slight waist if fit, and will gain weight in the belly area and face, loosing waist definition usually with age or weight gain. Sometimes the arms gain weight too, and sometimes they stay slim. The legs usually remain slender.
So, a small waist is typical, but yes, as you say, not a dramatic one, because although your waist is small, the Lollipop hips aren't very wide.
Your measurements seem a little more bottom heavy that I would expect from a Lollipop, but not by a lot (if 36 is the top and 38 the bottom). It could indicate that you could be a petit Vase as well, so I would check that one out to be sure.

The defining features of the Lollipop are large but not heavy boobs, slim hips, proportionally small waist and long elegant legs. Lollipops don’t have to work as hard as other body types to look good, but being this shape is certainly not without it's challenges.

In conclusion, I think there is a very good change that you are indeed a Lollipop, but I can't be sure because of you measurements. If you want you can send me a photo on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com , to double check. But the best way is read both types and see if you feel all the Lollipop info fits for you or if the Vase is better. You could be an untypical vase.
You know your body best, so trust your gut and see which one feels right. If not, I am here :-)

Hi, Patty. It is quite possible that you are a Lollipop, but there is also a chance that you could be a Goblet. It depends of broadness of back and shoulders and if the breasts appear heavy or light. If you send me a photo on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com, it would be easier for me to give you a more accurate feedback. Something as important as a wedding dress, can't be left to chance :-)

There is also a lot of dress advice on both the posts about Lollipop here on this link.

Yes! As G says, your measurements does sound more like an Hourglass. Your could possibly be a Vase actually, since you have a balanced figure according to your measurements, but left a comment on the Lollipop section.

I hope this helped :-)

Hi, Annie. From you description, it does sound like a Lollipop or a Goblet, body type.

The Goblet have large shoulders and a wide back, big boobs, not much of a waist, narrow hips, often a bit of a tummy and long legs.

Here's an overview of all the body types. There is two post about each of them. One about what works and what doesn't, and one about all the best looks. http://www.idealiststyle.com/the-body-types.html

A question, I have my top lenght, long as the below lenght, does the Flared / Bell-bottom trousers, Fluted skirts and the Full length trench coats that button under the bust, makes sproportions between legs and bust?? I'm between 61,81" and 63,77" tall, or better, short xD, its will makes me appear shorter?? Thanks a lot again. With love <3 Jasmine <3

Hi, Jasmine. You're very welcome :-) I'm so glad I could help. As for height, a high waistline will make your legs seem longer and your upper body shorter, and a dropped waist will make your legs look shorter and your upper body longer. So, since a Lollipop has a large chest, you want to avoid shortening your waistline, even though it's longer than a normal lollipop. The button under the chest, is more about highlighting where your chest ends and your stomach begins. The flare on your bottom half for pants and skirts, is about creating curves and balancing your hips and legs to the size of your chest.
Another important thing to add for a short person, is that a long dress will make a tall person look taller and a short person look shorter. So, in a way a short dress is better on a short person, and a short dress will look a lot shorter on someone with long legs. It's about how much skin you see, as it plays a trick on your eyes. Also, a hat can make a short person look shorter and a tall person look taller. For a short Lollipop, I would say that you can still wear all the Lollipop styles, just make sure you don't wear anything that looks a bit to long, like mid calf, or a little too long below the knee skirts/pants/coats/dresses, as if the clothes look like they're too long on you, you will look shorter. Ankle length or wearing heals under a floor length skirt/pants, will make you look taller. A floor length skirt/pants/dress/coat that touches the floor or more, or have a train can also make you look shorter, because it looks too long for you. So, having the cut in the right place is really important. Make sure the waistline is in the natural place, without having too much loose fabric directly under your chest. Fitted below bust, and then flare at hips if you're wearing a flared style.
As for coats, I would never go longer than knee length, as long coats will make you look shorter. Since you seem petite, I'm also adding, that you should stay away from large prints and patterns, and rather choose small prints and patterns, as they're more compatible with your petite size. Bold and large prints make you look smaller, and small patterns is balanced to your size.

In short, the Lollipop styles and where to leave the waistline, is still the same for a short or a longer waisted (balanced between legs and upper body) Lollipop. It's more about making sure that the clothes fit you right, and don't appear too big or too long on you, as that's the real shrinker. The reason high waisted pants are bad, is that it makes the Lollipop look as a long stick that ends with a large chest, just like a Lollipop. And the button under the chest on the long coat, still applies, just pick a knee length coat instead of full length.

I hope this answered your question. If not, don't be afraid to ask. If you're now feeling like you might not be a Lollipop, I would consider a Vase, as they have longer waistlines, Goblet is another type of top heavy type, but with a broad back and a heavier chest.

Thank you for making this post; it was very informative and helpful! However, I am a bit confused as to whether I am a lollipop shape, a goblet shape, or an hourglass shape.
I am very petite, standing up to about 5'1. However, most lollipops are normally tall, so I am conflicted as to whether more shorter ones exist.
My shoulders are a bit broad, but not exactly "masculine", as one would say. They measure around 38 inches. This is where I get confused, as goblet shapes usually have broad shoulders.
My bust is big - not unreasonably so, but still prominent enough, measuring 37 inches, and are a bra size of a USA 28K / UK 28H. All three shapes have quite the busty physique, so this is another spot of confusion.
My waist is very defined, measuring around 24 inches. I am not anorexic or anything; I can assure you that I am quite healthy.
Finally, my hips are 36 inches. This confuses me the most out of everything, as they are not really that wide. They are balanced with my bust, but not with my shoulders (the latter is wider).

I am a mess, please help. ;-;

Thank you.

Also, concerning my legs - they are actually balanced with my body (my inseam is 28 inches): not too long or short; however, they appear to be longer than they are. My thighs are somewhere between slim to medium, and my calves are medium and a bit muscular.

Hi :-) You can very well be a short Lollipop, as it's more about proportions than total length. Also, even though it's normal to have long legs, that just means longer that the torso. But, even then it's possible to break the mold. My cousin is a Cornet with shorter legs than what is normal for that body type, but very much a Cornet still.
So, to be clear. Yes, there are many short Lollipops :-)
A Goblet has a broad back and the look of wide shoulders, but it doesn't have to look masculine. It just needs to be broader and have more body weight on it than your lower part.

So, shoulders are 38 inches.
chest is 37 inches, with a USA 28K and UK 28H bra size.
a very defined waist at 24 inches, at a normal for you body weight
and 36 inches hips.
Thighs are curvy, but not dramatically curvy.
Legs are balanced with body, at a 28 inches inseam, and balanced to torso length, yet appear long.
Calves are medium sized and muscular. So neither heavy or very slender.

Have you considered a Vase body type? They have chest and hips that balance, can sometimes have broad shoulders that are not masculine.
They have a long and gently curved waist, with long curvy legs that are often quite slender looking without being skinny.
I would also think about Cello, but I think the fact that you're considering top heavy types as well as Hourglass, points more to that your legs are long and leaner, yet curvy. That sounds more like Vase legs.

It doesn't sound like a Goblet or Lollipop figure, mostly because of the tiny waist and curve on your lower half. So, I think the Vase might be a good match for you. Check it out, and if it's not a match let me know and we'll look closer into it :-)

Hi,
first of all, thank you for your article. It was very enlightening and great to see that there are actually more than just the typical four body shapes. However, I am not quite sure whether I fit into the lolipop or goblet form.

I have 32DD and a 25 inch waist (approximately, because I needed to switch it from centimeters). However, I am quite short (5'0") and my hips are smaller than my chest area.

Sometimes, it gets very confusing for me. I feel like that I look very chubby in a lot of outfits because of my chest and height or that it makes me seem wider, especially when I am wearing skirts, which I find sad because I love skirts and dresses.

I would be really happy to receive some advice on this.

Love,
Lili

Hi, Lili! The difference between a Goblet and a Lollipop, is that a Goblet has a broad back, so a wider back and shoulders, and a heavyer breasts than a Lollipop. They will also gain weight a little more on the thigh area, hips and stomach, while still being larger on top. A Lollipop will have less heavy breast and and have more of a straight figure with large breast. Even though a Lollipop will also gain weight to it's stomach, if it does gain weight. You could say that a Goblet is kind of a mix between a Lollipop and a Cornet, and a Lollipop is more of a Column with large breast. Hopefully that will help you distinguish the two. Which type of back and shoulders do you have, a wide one, or a narrow one?

Firstly - many thanks for creating this blog and post! I've been scouring the internet for advice on body types lately due to my increasing bouts of annoyance on what I appear to look good (or terrible!) in and this was really enlightening compared to other posts that often compartmentalise body types into just top heavy or bottom heavy.

I'm leaving a comment as I'm having some struggles identifying my body type and would really love some insight from another perspective (as we can all be a little conflicted on our own bodies). I settled on Lollipop at first due to a top heavy figure and not-so-wide hips, but similarly to another commenter above, it seems like I'm on the short end and don't fit the tall and slender profile.

My measurements are roughly 35-36", 26" and 36", with a average back, not noticeably wide or slender, and I stand at 164cm tall, but the most befuddling part for me is that my waist is neither defined nor invisible. My body shape isn't straight enough that it's hard to pick out, but I seem to have quite a lot of mass between the waist and hips, such that the waist is not that prominent either. To make this clearer maybe, I have a really short torso (like the Hourglass page suggests, but I don't have much of a bum or mass in the thighs to consider myself close to that). I read that I shouldn't wear high waisted bottoms, but the larger abdomen space makes it unflattering to wear something low waisted for me, and my long legs seem to benefit from the high waisted look.

I seem too chunky for a Lollipop, but far too straight for an Hourglass! I hope this was not too lengthy and I would appreciate all and any help in this regard - and thank you (again and again!) for all your effort and time xx

Hi, Aida! Thank you so much for your kind feedback.

About the tall and slender thing. Many very slender body parts will seem longer, and that's why they get the tall look. In reality there are versions of all the body types in all heights and all sizes. So, focus more on how your body is compared to itself. Is it top heavy, bottom heavy, or equal top to bottom. Do you have curves, if yes, where? Do you have a long or a short waist. Are you shoulders wide or narrow, arms full or slender, legs curvy or slender? And if your legs are curvy are the lower legs curvy too, or just the thigh. Are your hips equal to breast, or not? I hope that cleared things up a little.

Your measurements sound a lot like a curvy and balanced type, as the chest and hips are equal and waist a lot smaller. You have a short torso, and shoulders and back are not broad. Highwasisted looks great on you. Considering your bum is not very full and you have long and lean legs, I would say that you sound like you could maybe be a short Vase? Is your waist short because you are, or short for your body? If the Lollipop clothes don't fit you right, you can safely remove that option, as what suits you is more important that what you look like. If your waist in indeed short, then I would say that you are probably an Hourglass with just a little less on the back side. Your measurements fit. it just depends on if your hips really are that much smaller than your chest or if it just might be something you feel. You measurements tell a different story. However, it is possible that seeing you, it looks very different. If we look at the information you have provided, it really sounds like you are a curvy type, and not top or bottom heavy. There is also a little chance that you might be a Soft Brick, as they can appear curvy and have long legs and balanced shoulders to hips too. However, it depends on how small your waist is in this case, and it sounds like it might be too small. If you feel like you describe that your wast is not that defined and visible, I think you should consider if a Brick could fit. You would in that case be a Soft Brick, which is just a Brick that has more curve that usual. Examples of this would be Jennifer Hudson and Eva Longoria. I think also maybe Eva Mendes if my memory serves me right.

I hope this helps. As you say, figuring out yourself can be so much harder than figuring out others, as we have never seen ourselves in anything other than photos and pictures (usually). So, I think a lot of people struggle with the same thing. It's always good to ask for a little help and a fresh perspective when we're stuck :-)

i finally found a more detailed description of different body types. thank you so much.

i am just confused whether my body shape is lollipop, goblet or cornet. so i am almost 5ft tall and skinny, as they tell me, when seen in my normal outfit. i have broad shoulder like a goblet/cornet, and small boobs, or almost am i flat-chested, like a cornet. but my tummy is disproportionately chubby which makes me think my body shape is lollipop. i have thin thighs and, like, no calves. thing is, i have good bum. in leggings and fit shirt, i look sexy enough, they tell me i am sexy enough. but i hate it that my fat usually goes to my arms, i have arms, a little big to not match with my lower body. my waist and hips are both not defined, unless i am in fit clothes, i can see some shape. my ribs, like my collarbone, are now a little bit showing as i do belly dancing and ab workouts. true, i would have really no problem if i could slim down my arms and make my tummy flat. but they say, according to some certain body type, it is almost impossible.

what do you think is my body type?

when it comes to clothes... as i told earlier, leggings are best for my bum and hips. my sadness comes from knowing i cannot wear any dress or skirt (unless so fit the focus shifts from thighs to bum) without pitying for my calves. i can wear shorts but cannot match it with sleeveless or tube top. i do not think fit dresses would be hanging in my closet.

Hi, Esme! I think it sounds a lot like you're a Cornet. The Cornet also gain weight to their tummy and upper arms when they gain. The Cornet can also have a good bum or thighs as it's a bit of a muscular looking body type unless you're very slender. So, I would say that I think that you're a Cornet.

I hope this helped, so you figure it out and feel good in all types of clothes like dresses too. :-)

Isn't Angelina a goblet but just thin? Her shoulders are quite broad relative to her hips.

Hi, Sophie! I can see why you would think that, as I used to think so too. However, it’s because it’s only her shoulders that are wide. Her back and decolotage is not broad, and that’s an important Goblet trait. A goblet has a broad back and a heavier breast look. A Lollipop is more like a Column with large breast. It’s all about the total, and sometimes one or two things doesn’t perfectly fit the description. A Lollipop has a more delicate and lighter built bone stuckture and muscle tone look than a Goblet. Especially in the top. It’s also a very visable in the way they gain weight. A Goblet will often have «stronger» look, and a Lollipop will often have more delicate arms like Angelina does below her shoulders. It’s a good question you ask though, because the difference can often be hard to see. Body types are usually typed by their features, but it’s just as much as the total balance of the body. That’s why some people are harder to figure out. To sum it up, there are always some variations, so if in doubth, look at the balance of the body and where it is or is not. Angelina Jolie, is allover very lightly built. Her shoulders are wider, but still delicately built and her torso as well. So it’s basically because her torso/back is not broad and her breast not as heavy, as that is the features that deside the differences in what these two types look their best in. They have a lot in common, but some different needs.

I hope this cleared things up :-)
