THE BODY TYPE : COLUMN

Gwyneth Paltrow is a perfect example of the body shape, The Column. The figure is straight and slender, which means the shoulder width is the same as the hip width. They have a slight waist, longer legs, and they don’t have much of a bust, tummy or bottom. The Column figure can at times appear shapeless, too thin and child-like, but they have a very good body shape and it's easy to dress to impress.

The most important guidelines.
- The key to making The Column look great is to try to introduce a little shape.
- Go for round necklines, soft fabrics and dramatic cuts for your upper body.
- Anything angular or bold draws the gaze to it's extreme edges, and this gives the illusion of shape.
- Avoid anything that just hangs straight down or is shapeless and has no detail.
- Remember to emphasize the waist.

There is really not much more advice to give the Column. Just emphasise the waist and avoid anything that just hangs shapelessly and you're done!

GOOD FOR YOUR SHAPE:
Angular single button jacket.
Belted three-quarter length coats with hip pockets.
Round-neck tops and sweaters.
Shaped and gathered shirts.
Fluted long sleeves.
Anything that emphasize your waistline.
A-line skirts.
Cropped pants.
Slightly flared pants.
Long, chunky necklace.
Big accessories to add shape.
NEVER WEAR:
Anything shapeless, particularly long coats and dresses.
Formless three-quarter length jackets.
Straight dresses.
Dropped waist.
Cropped tops.

Other Columns: NiIcole Kidman and Jane Fonda.

Straight figures do it well!

Hiya, I'm slightly confused on what body shape I am. I'm 5'6" (169 cm) and my measurements are:
33-24-34.
My waist is quite pronounced but my shoulders are broad. My body and shoulder shape kinda resembles Isabeli Fontana but a 5'6" version of her body.
I also have shapely legs that are a little thick at the top and then slim down and end with small ankles and feet. I've juggled around with the idea of a petite hourglass/broad hourglass/half hourglass-half inverted triangle but I'm not confident and am unsure on what to wear.
Please help me, Caitlyn.

Hi, Caitlyn. Isabeli Fontana looks like she’s a Goblet, so I would check that one out. But, from what you’rr describing, it sounds like you might be a small/slim Cello. A Cornet and Column will usually have a small chest, and it sounds like you have a large chest. Kirstie Alley and Serena Williams are also less full Cello’s, so check them out and see what you think. To see the posts about these body types, so to the OVERVIEW in the top menu. There should be two posts about about each body type. If none of these fit, let me know and we’ll look at other options :-).

I hope this helped!
