THE BODY TYPE : CELLO

The Cello is very close to an Hourglass as they are both women with fabulous curves. The Cello waist is also short but not as small, and the figure is on the fuller end of the scale. They might feel a little pear shaped because of their big bottom, but the broad shoulders and big boobs balance it out.
The Cello have large boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, broad shoulders and slim lower legs.
Supermodel Tara Lynn is a full figured Cello, and anyone should be proud to share her body type.
For the Cello, It’s all about daring to show yourselves of a little.

The most important guidelines.
- Cellos have what it takes to carry off almost anything in terms of boldness and can pull of strong prints or fussy details that would simply swamp other body types.
- The biggest obstacle Cellos face is looking good in pants, but full length wide-leg trousers is an alternative. They smooth your shape, elongate your legs and make your thighs look sleeker.
- When wearing skinny jeans, use something loose or forgiving on top and make sure the cut doesn't end up on your widest part. Preferably crotch to mid thigh length, think tunic or dress. Tulip-tops are also very forgiving.
- Keep the bottom half simple.
- Pencil skirts doesn't flatter your shape, but if you find the right figure hugging dress you can rock it. Make sure it has a firming effect and that the material is thick. A tummy covering function or some gentle folds in the right place, is also a good idea.
- Halterneck dresses with a wide waist/belt, is your best look.
- Don’t be afraid to use bold pieces and display your attributes up top!

Cellos come in many different sizes. Serena Williams being one very fit and well toned version, to Oprah Winfrey at her largest. Just how comfortable you are with showing your tummy or thighs si up to you.
But dare to be bold and wear things those little women would be overwhelmed in!

No way Kate Upton is a cello, as cellos are well balanced between upper and lower halves. Kate is boldly beautiful but she is definitely way bigger on top than on bottom and she almost doesn't have any waist at all. I would say she fits The Goblet description to a T.

I am confused about my shape. I have been labeled a pear but I have big boobs ( wear a 40 DDD bra). Measurements are as follows 42.5 37.5 and 47.5. Please help me so that I can know what clothes to wear.

Without seeing a photo, I'd say you're probably more of a pear. Generally, a cello will have bust and shoulders that are close to the hip measurements. Just as an example, my bust is around 47/48 and my hips are 47 and I have a higher, shorter waist. But you might find it helpful to incorporate elements of both pear and cello. Maybe looking at top styles suited for cello shapes and bottoms suited for pears. You will probably want to draw attention to the upper body as much as possible and to create waist definition. If you don't have a long, natural waist, I'd try some thick, wide belts for the upper waist and shirts with details around the neckline (ruffles, embroidery, etc) or V necks. You want to draw attention to the bust and draw they eye up.

Like you I was classified as a pear/spoon shape but my breast are large too which makes me look proportioned. I have a short waist and high hips so I think that we are a mixture of an cello and pear. I wear tops that cello shaped women wear and bottoms that pear shaped women wear and it works for me.

Hi, Theresa. I think you are right that you might be something like a Cello, as the Cello is sort of the Pear type of the Hourglass family. They have large breast, but even more on the bottom. They are proportonate, but they are deffinetly boodie girls.
Cellos like Tara Lynn is a good example of that.
A Pear-Cello, coul'd also mean that you are a Bell. But that said, I am working on additions to the systems to include all the borderline types, such as Pear-Cello, Column-Vase, Skittle-Brick and so on. You will always be more like one of the types, but might have to incorporate rules from other groups to personalize your body type rules.
There is no rule without exeption, and body type systems no matter how cleverly planned, can not account for the diversity and uniqeness of the human body.

Hi, Tracy. I think it is possible that you are a Cello, as the Cello is soft of a mix of pear shape(or Bell) and an Hourglass. The Cello is an Hourglass type with broad shoulders, large breast, the bottom is even larger, and the waist is more short shan tiny. The curves come more from the chest and hip/bottom differences than a very curves waist. But you coul'd also be a larger sized Pear, Bell or Skittle. Also these types do get more on the chest if they gain weight, but a Pear should have a long and somewhat flat tummy, slender arms, and small breast. If they gain weight this will change a little, but the proportions will still be the same. The larger lower half and visably less up top. A good tiebreaker would be you lower legs. Bottom heavy types will usually have thicker ancles and lower legs, and typical for a Cello is that their lower legs are slim comprared to their thighs. The thinner the Cello, the more obvious this will be, as it's natural to gain weight all over. But still, it is the proportions that truly matter, and what flatters your figure the most. Trying on different styles to see if the Cello styles or the Pear/Bell/Skittle styles would look better, would also be a good way to see what works.

Here are some more Cello clothing tips.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-cello-your-best-looks

And here is the OVERVIEW, so you can check out
-The Bell: The very feminine Bell has small shoulders, small boobs, small and short waist, big thighs and a large bottom.
-The Skittle: The Skittle is characterized by a long slender upper body which gets wider at the middle, and despite their long legs, carry most of their weight around the thighs. They have average boobs, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs and chunky calves.
-The Pear. The classic Pear has small boobs, long waist, flat tummy, great arms, saddlebags and heavy legs.

http://www.idealiststyle.com/overview.html

A Skittle would have slightly broader shoulders, and a little less of a dramatic difference than a Pear, as the Skittle has more of a thigh situation than a large bottom, and a little more on the chest, arms and tummy. But, there is no rule without exception, so go with what you feel is right. As no one is exactly the same, the ods are that some people will be borderline an other type. So, the trick is to figure out where you feel most at home, and just add that one thing that is different than typical for you. For example, if you are a Pear with larger breasts, then just follow the Pear Body Type rules for everything else, and approach the chest differently. Maybe it's not that dominating, and it that case, Pear styles will be fine anyways.
Also, like Venus and Theresa commented, maybe you need to incorporate styles from both types, and call yourself a Pear-Cello.

I hope this helped. You can send me photos on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com if you feel like you still need more help

Thank you. I now wear the clothes for cello shaped women because I do have large breasts and a short waist and I also incorporate clothes that are made for bell shaped women. The best of both worlds I say.

I'm also a combination. I'm definitely pear shaped on bottom with saddlebags on my thighs, and I have the pear's narrow shoulders, but I also have a large bust and a super short waist. When I was slimmer, I carried most of my abdominal weight in my lower belly and had a clearly defined waist, but now that I'm plus sized (and after 3 kids), I carry weight in my entire belly.

I'm also only 4'11". Makes dressing myself kind of challenging. :D

Hi, Katie. If you have narrow shoulders it is more likely that you are an Hourglass or a Bell. A Cello has wide shoulders. It actually sounds like you could either be a Bell with larger than usual chest, or an Hourglass with a little extra on the tummy. The Hourglass is the most likely, but there are a lot of Bell tendencies there too.

I hope this helped :-)

Funm, based on measurements you might be a cello, but I think it depends on how your shape looks overall. Does your tummy look rounded or is your weight more evenly distributed all around? Is the waist noticeable, but relatively short? Stand in front of a mirror with close fitting clothes. Or look at a full body photograph of yourself. If you see a definite waist definition but it's a short waist and you have large breasts and bottom, then yes, you'd be a cello. If you have a waist, but your bottom is a little flatter and your boobs are prominent, then you'd probably be a Vase. Otherwise, if you look very even overall and there's no clear waist, I'd guess Column shape.

Hi, Funm. I assume that your 18 inch shoulders are only width, and the rest of the meassurments are around. I am almost 6 feet tall, and you have about the same shoulder witdth as me. I see you write that you are tall too, so it can still be in proportion to the rest of your body. The broad shoulders combined with the bust, waist and hip widt would indicate that you are indeed a Cello, but could also be a Vase, or maybe even a Brick or a Column. Most likely a Cello or a Vase, because of your hip to waist ratio, but without seeing you I can't be absolutely certain. An Hourglass will usually have an even more dramatic difference. A small and tiny waist, and the Cello has only a short one combined with a curvy top and bottom.
As Venus also wrote below, it all depends on the overall look and proportions. And that a Cello is more likely to have a rounded belly than the Hourglass and Vase.

The Cello is an Hourglass type with broad shoulders, large breast, the bottom is even larger, and the waist is more short shan tiny. The curves come more from the chest and hip/bottom differences than a very curves waist. In a way a Cello is the Pear shape of the Hourglass types, as they usually have the a little more bottom than bust. Could just be in appearance, and is not an indicator of hip width as the buttocks, thighs and hips together can say more than just the hip width.
A typical trait for a Cello is that their lower legs are slim comprared to their thighs. The thinner the Cello, the more obvious this will be, as it's natural to gain more curve all over. But still, it is the proportions that truly matter, and what flatters your figure the most.

The definition of the Cello, in short: The Cello is all woman and the defining features are big boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, broad shoulders and slim lower legs.

Here are some more Cello clothing tips.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-cello-your-best-looks

The Vase, is like a streched out Hourglass, and is usually a little bit more towards a Goblet/Lollipop, as they have a less rounded and bold bottom, and is typicly a tiny bit more top heavy. But only slightly, as a Vase should have curves on the top as well as the bottom, and be balanced. Again, it is more about perception of the figure. The streched waist is also less dramatic as for curves because of the length it is divided on. A Vase too can come in all sizes.

And here is the link the OVERVIEW of the body types, if you want to look at the Vase, Brick and Column as well.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/the-body-types.html

The Vase: is the most elegant body type, and the signature features are big boobs, gently curving longer waist, hips equal bust, slim thighs and legs. They can also have a bit chunky upper arms.

The Brick: Slight or no waist, longer legs, small bust and bottom, and usually broad shoulders, rather thick thighs and calves. Shoulder width is the same as hip width, without any particularly prominent body area. This shape can come in many sizes and for some the tummy is more prominent. (The reason I thought of Brick is that they too can have larger breast and bottoms, and even though they have a straighter figure they have a slight curve. Examples are Eva Longoria and Jennifer Hudson. This is not the obvious choice for you, but something to look at to since you seem to not know if you really are a Cello)

The Column: The figure is straight and slender. The shoulder width is the same as your hip width. A slight waist, longer legs and they don’t have much of a bust, tummy or bottom.
(As you can see, your not likely a Column, but I know some that are borderline a Vase. So, there is no rule without exeption, and systems no matter how cleverly planned, can not account for human diversity. I have thought about adding the boderline types as well, such as Column-Vase, and so on, as I know two of them.)

I know 5.11 Cellos, Columns with more curve than the steriotype, and Bricks that are tall and have a little curve. Typically a curvy Brick will have a belly, and more of a curvy back.

I hope this helped. You can send me photos on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com if you feel like you still don't know.

Hi, Elaine. From you description you do sound like a Cello, as the Cello has large breast, but is even more bootylicious. It is sort of the Pear shape of the curvy family. Spoon, sounds like it would be the same as a Goblet, but a Goblet doesn't have a large bottom, hips and thighs. The difference between an Hourglass and a Cello is a lot about how small the waist is. A Cello has a short waist, and the curvy look comes more from the large breast and hips and so on. The Hourglass has a small and tiny waist, so their hip to waist ratio is even more dramatic. Also, the Cello will have broad shoulders and back, and the Hourglass won't be as bold in that area.
Go, stand in front of a mirror, and see if you can tell which type is closer to you. :-)

I hope this answered you question.

is a skater skirt the same thing as a mini skirt? because I have a plain black one and I honestly feel like it looks so good on me

A skater skirt is a flaret short skirt, instead of a tight one, and would be much better for a Cello than a fitted one. Also, a mini skirt can also be a skater skirt, but a skater skirt is never fitted.

https://www.google.no/search?q=skater+skirt&espv=2&biw=2254&bih=1196&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiSrumrpLfPAhWqFZoKHZFFD4AQ_AUIBigB

Typically, a skater skirt length would't be ideal for a Cello, as you have to consider the Cello group as a whole when you make rules as these.
However, I do think some Cellos, as they are a curvy type can look really nice in skinny jeans, pencil skirts and mini-skirts. A lot of the plus size models these days are Cellos, and they wear that stuff all the time. Remember that rules are meant to be broken and as I've mentioned in the introduction post, it's just about not breaking more than one rule at a time. Your beautiful body, will still be your beautiful body, it will just appear differently in one piece of clothing to another. It really comes down to how extreme of a Cello you are or not (not about size, but details and proportions). A balanced Cello can break many rules and look good, they will only look even more dramatic. A very dramatic Cello might not be as comfortable with showing of as much, and so the rules are there to guide you in how to flatter your figure in the absolute best way. I would still say that for most of the types, the rules are more easily broken when it comes to showing more skin, as bodies are beautiful and worse if you cover up too much in the wrong way, like wearing a tent.

Conclusion: If that skater skirt looks good on you, wear it, no matter what the rules say. Another thing is, that not even all Cellos are the same, as no one is exactly the same, so different people can break different rules and so on.

Hi, I'm a little confused about my shape. I think I would put myself somewhere between a cello and a pear, but my proportions are a little strange. My measurements are 50.5 (44dd), 44.5, and 57.5 (bust, waist, hips), which would definitely put me into a pear category, except that I have broad shoulders (almost as wide as my hips), bigger upper arms and a wide back, which makes me look more proportioned. Also, most of my hip measurement is in the fullness of my bum, not so much in my hips. I do have a tummy, from a side view my boobs stick out more, and it's arranged in the front view so that I have a fairly defined, but definitely short and high, waist. I'm 5'11, and I have larger calves. I'd really say I was a cello except for my not-very-large bust and my larger lower legs, also I gain weight much more evenly and overall look more proportioned than a pear.
Can you help? I love your blog and you seem to give really solid advice for everyone else here, and I'd really appreciate your advice.

Hi, Sara! Thank you for your lovely feedback. I will do my best to help you figure this out. For starters, I think it does sounds like you're more of a Cello, just probably not a classic one. The Cello is sort of a mix between the Pear shape and the Hourglass, so it fits pretty well with your description. Also, a Pear has a long waist, small breasts, slender upper arms, somewhat flat tummy (compared to the rest of the body at least, for fuller figures), wide hips, saddlebags, heavy legs and lower legs in general. You Have a 44DD cup size and a close enough hip to chest ratio for a Cello. A Cello has large breast, but the bottom is usually larger/fuller/wider and the most dominant feature of the two. The Vase and the Cello are two closely related versions of the Hourglass, but with some differences separating them enough to be an entirely different body type. Each one leaning in another direction then the other. Your arm, waist, and back description sounds more like a Cello figure. A Pear doesn't really have broad shoulders, or a high waistline, as they have a long waistline more similar to a Vase for example, stretched out. The majority of your features also seem to lean much more towards the Cello, so I don't really think you could be a Pear with some Cello tendencies either (Although, not impossible). Google, Serena Williams in a bikini, and analyze her shape. It does sound a little similar to what you are describing in some ways. It's more balanced, because she's not as dramatic as many of the Cellos, in that typical sense. A Cello figure is always dramatic, but there are many ways for a shape to be dramatic. The high and defined, short waist is also more of a Cello feature then a Pear. As for the lower legs, I have seen Cellos with fuller lower legs too, just usually slender in comparison to the bottom, thighs and so on. Everything can feel bigger when you're tall (I'm 6 feet myself, and can sometimes project that onto myself if I focus on details instead of the figure as a whole), so it might even be an illusion of the lower legs being heavy, while their actually balanced?
Also, there is no rule without exception, so you could possibly be the exception to the rule. No body is exactly the same, so with all these variations, there has to be some untypical twists.
Last but not least, you could also check out the Skittle, as they have more on upper arms, tummy, shoulders, breast, and more of a thigh situation than hips and bottom (although they still have some of that too). They have heavy lower legs as well, but also a long waist, not a short one.

http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-skittle
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-skittle-your-best-looks

I would also consider the fact that you might be a Cello with just a bit more on the lower legs. You could call it a Cello with a dash of Skittle/Pear. Which means that you can follow all the Cello rules, and just borrow a few tips from the Pear shape when it comes to lower legs.

What top would a cello wear if she doesn't feel like showing off her upper body? Or prefers a crewneck instead of v or u neck top? What about in summer? I'm just tired of drawing attention to my chest all the time and want to wear something different.

Hi, Burlyqlady. Have you seen this post? http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-cello-your-best-looks

I think that tunics and long sweater dresses are a good option in those situations and I know many Cellos that wear that religiously. Usually paired with skinny jeans or leggings, as the Cello don't always feel great in pants. It gives a dress/skirt/pants hybrid look and gives you a less fitted look, better for "covering up" if thats what you feel like. I totally get it. Some days we all just wan't to wear loose fitted clothes without the risk of bending over and revealing our chest, especially if we're not wearing a bra. So options for those days are good to have. And yes a loose fitted crew neck is great for that.
As for the crewneck, see if you can find something in the middle. You don't want to wear a narrow neckline as a Cello, and you feel like a low cut one is too much chest. If you find one that shows your collarbones, but stops there, that can be a good compromise. Your chest might look larger than with a low cut one, but that doesn't mean it can't look good. Your chest will always be there, so showing cleavage or the size will always be there. Only a minimiser bra can make it look smaller. A low cut look will definitely draw more attention to them. So yes, I think that could work.
As for summer. Use tank tops, dresses and t-shirts that have a neckline that is as open as possible, but doesn't show cleavage. Something between a crew neck and a U neck, more like half an O neck.

If you look at the good outfits on Tara Lynn here in this post, images 3,7,8,9,11 and 12 from the top and down, you can see the good balance between a deep neckline and a narrow one. It's conservative, but open. In the other post, you can see Oprah's sweater with some bling creating a v-neck look, and it's actually a less open neckline. The details breaks up the chest area in the way a low cut opening also does.

The just show the collar bones and stop there look, is probably the easiest to find, so start there, and keep your eyes open for styles that breaks up your chest without having to show the skin. Patterns and prints can also do that. Just not too small print as that will make things look larger. The Cello can handle bold print and bold accessories, so don't be afraid to experiment a little. Also wearing neutral materials and colors on your top and something to draw the attention elsewhere, like your face with red lips and a cat eye, bold earrings, wild shoes, fun skirt, and so on, can also steal some attention from the chest area and divert it somewhere else.

There are also photos of the style of looser fitter sweaters and tunics you can use in this and the added post.
I hope this answered your question. Let me know if you need any more help :-)

Hi, Ruby! A short waist and high hips can be either a Cello, Hourglass, or a Bell. It depends on your lower legs, shoulder width, chest size, and if your waist is very curved or more straight with just larger hips and chest areas. From what you are describing it does sound a lot like a Cello, as they can have those types of differences. If you have broad shoulders and slender lower legs compared to the rest of you (especially thighs), and a waist that is more small because of the other curves, than small because it dips in a lot, that points to Cello. If you have softer shoulders, still same or similar width as hips, a curved waist, and balanced lower legs (this is a little different from person to person), that points to Hourglass. Go with your gut, even if it doesn’t seem to be a perfect fit. Not all bodies fit smack into a type. The most important thing is that you feel the clothes work for you. Maybe try if wedges or classic pumps are better, and take it from there?

I hope this helped!

Is it possible for a cello to have a long torso? I have a prominent rib cage with at least 4" between the bottom rib and top of my hips. I have large strong legs, but they are shorts- I'm definitely 60% torso. My measurements (bust-waist-hip) are 39-30-40. I have strong shoulders and large upper arms and they measure about 41".

Hi, K! A Cello will usually have a short waist, but can have longer torso, so as it's balanced with the legs. However, not all fit the stereotype, and so yes it is possible. The body types with a long torso and shorter legs is a Pear, but as your chest is the largest part, you could be either a more chesty Pear, or maybe a Skittle. A Skittle also has strong legs, have anything from small to medium boobs, and a long waist. It is also a possibility that you are a Vase, since your measurements are very Hourglass like, but you have a long waist. I would say you could be anything from a Vase, Cello, Pear to a Skittle, only with shorter than usual legs or larger than usual chest. It does happen. My cousin is a Cornet with short legs, but definitely a Cornet. To be sure, we need to look at all the details. What are your lower legs like, us your bum and hips large too, or is it more thigh thing? Is you calves and ankles balanced or do they feel a little heavy? So to sum it up, you have strong shoulders and large upper arms, combined with a large chest, long waist, and shorter than torso legs. You hips are balanced to your chest. This looks a lot like either a fuller more curvy Skittle with a long upper body, a Vase with shorter than usual legs, or a Cello with a longer than usual torso/waist. The only way to know for sure, is to try out the clothes, shoes, and styles that are recommended for these body types and see which one looks the best on you. Because when it all comes down to it, the only thing that matters is what clothes fit you best. Use the questions I mentioned above to help you narrow it down, and then test the clothes, and compare it to the info on these three types. There should be two posts on each body type, which can all be found here: https://www.idealiststyle.com/the-body-types.html
Start with the least likely Skittle, then to the Vase, and work your way to back to the Cello, so you get a more clear idea about what feels the most like you, to compare it with when you look through it again.
A Cello and Vase will have more of a slender lower leg than a Skittle, but it can also depend on how full or slender you are. The more slender, the straighter, the fuller, the bolder. My Skittle legs seem more balanced when I'm slender, and I gain weight on my legs and below the waist fast. A Cello and Vase will gain weight more evenly, and a Cello has quite slender lower legs compared to thighs, while a Vase has a more stretched and balanced version of that with long sleder legs. However, if the Vase clothes fits you best, you'll just be a Vase with shorter legs.

I hope this helped!

Hi, Kiyukii! It can sound like you’re a Cello, for sure. A Cello has broad shoulders, large chest, a small waist more because hips and chest is so much wider, more than because it dips in a lot. They have large thighs, slender lower legs in comparison, and wide hips and a full but. It can sometimes look like an Hourglass, and sometimes like a Pear with boobs, wide shoulders, and a short waist instead of long. If you feel like an Apple or a Rectangle, there is also a chance that you might be a Brick with a little extra curve, so a Soft Brick. If you have a really small waist, and not wide shoulders, that would be more of an Hourglass. If you have a long waist and a somewhat large chest, that sounds more like a Vase.

I hope this helped!

These pages are wonderful, thank you!
But I still can’t seem to place myself so I’m commenting just incase someone has input! I’m bigger than I want to be at the moment, but I'm 5’3 44-36-46 with a short waist/high hip/shelf, big tummy that sits low, kinda chunky thighs and square hips/bum and average boobs, my underbust is not far different from my waist, and I definitely don’t have narrow shoulders, though they're still tiny bit smaller than my hips, by measurement if not by sight.

I’ve mostly looked at Bell, Cello, Brick, Hourglass, Skittle, Apple, Pear and I’m just lost :P

Hi, Jess. Thank you so much for your kind words about my page. I really appreciate it!

Your measurements sound a lot like a Cello. The question is, do you have full or slender lower legs compared to the rest of your body? It sounds like you're either a Cello, Hourglass, Brick, or Bell. A Pear and a Skittle usually has a long waist, and a Bell or a Pear would usually have a somewhat narrow shoulders. A Brick has broad shoulders too and the same width as the hips, but if you're a Brick, I think you might be a Soft Brick, like Jennifer Hudson. It's like a Brick, but they're curvyer than the stereotype.

Figure out your lower legs, and check out these types.
I hope this helped!

Hi need some help to figure out if I’m a cello. 5’5”, 39-29-40 with very thick full thighs. I’m also short waisted. My husband says definitely yes but I’m iffy because my bum in full, but my hips are more narrow and straight down. Help please?

Hi, Momof! It definitely sounds like you're a Cello. About your hips being straighter, that can just be because a Cello is similar to an Hourglass, but instead of a very narrow waist, they usually have dramatic curves more because of the chest and hips make curves, and the waist itself is actually more straight. The only other type I can think of that would have these balanced measurements and curves, combined with a short waist would be a soft Brick. So, check that one out too, but I think it sounds more like you're a Cello too. Your shoulders are too wide and waist too short for the bottom heavy types, and your measurements are too balanced and bum to full for a top heavy type. Which brings us to straight and curvy types, which your description fits best with the Cello or a soft Brick. A soft Brick is a Brick that has a curvy look, but in reality has a straight shape. They appear curvy because they have more of a chest and bottom, and don't have a dominating belly. So, it's kind of like a Brick, flowing into another group.

I hope this helped!

I am a plus size woman. I get so disheartened when shopping for skirts and dresses because I can't figure out what shape I am.
Bust 49
shoulders 49
waist 43
hips 49

The hip dip is so evident, it looks like I have shorter legs, they are a little slimmer. But my boobs are the biggest feature and my tummy isnt flat.
I live in slim/skinny jeans.

Hi, Tash! From your measurements, it does sound a lot like you're a Cello. A Cello is often hard to figure out as it's not one of the typical Hourglass, Apple, Pear, Cornet and Columns shapes. A Cello is very close to an Hourglass, but can often feel like a mix between an Hourglass and other types. I've heard people feeling like they lean towards a Pear, a Skittle, a Brick, and a Goblet. Just dipends on the individual. Your shoulders are broad, chest large, waist is smaller and hips are equal to shoulders and chest. Since you also feel like you're lower legs are a bit more slender compared to the rest of you, that is also a very typical Cello feature.

If not, I would also look at the Brick (You would be a Soft Brick then, like Jennier Hudson and Eva Longoria), and also the Goblet. Just to make sure, as you said you feel like you're legs are more slender than the rest of you and that your tummy isn't flat.
An Hourglass, Vase or a Cello doesn't always have a flat tummy either, so maybe also check out the Vase. Look at the total sum of your body. Is it top heavy, balanced top and bottom, or bottom heavy? That is a good pointer towards which of these groups to look more closely at. A larger woman will always have more curve, so start with which body part is more dominant or if none is. You can still be a Column, Goblet and so on too. However, your measurements and description sounds the most like a Cello, Vase, Hourglass, Goblet, or Brick. So start there.

I hope this helped!

Hi, I always struggle to decide/know what body shape I am, from all the descriptions on various sites.

Height 5ft 5.5"
Dress size UK 14-16 (Tipping to the 16 end a bit lately)
I feel like my torso and legs are more or less equal.

Bust 42"
Waist 38"
Hips 42"
Shoulders 45" (approx.)

My back is broad, I'm a c-d cup depending on the bra fit. I have a "duck butt" high round but sticks out. My calves are thick but defined and not fatty - I am really big boned.. My stomach isn't flat but it doesn't look like I have a beach ball under my top either.

Any ideas on the direction I should be heading?

Hi, Amanda! From what you're describing, it sounds a lot like you're a Cello body type.
Check it out and see if it's a fit.

I hope that helps!

what body shape am I ? I have a broad back and broad hips. I also have big boobs - I wear a DD cup. I am very curvy, though I am only 5'1. My waist is very short but it is also my smallest part. My measurements are 40 30 40.

Also I often have so much trouble finding clothes for my body shape - I love dresses but I don't know which type of dress suits me - any advice?

Hi, Maria! From what you're describing this sounds absolutely like a Cello. Could be an Hourglass also, but the fact that you mention broad shoulders make it sound more like a Cello. A Cello usually also have kind of slim lower legs compared to the rest of the body. However, I have seen some that fits everything else and not that and that are still very much Cellos.

Look at this post for clothing tips, and here's the other posts about Cellos: https://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/body-type-cello-your-best-looks
I also think Cellos look amazing when wearing fitted clothes and fitted waists that show off those amazing curves. So, my advice would be to flaunt it and love your curves. Also, you might need to get some belts or a sewing machine, so you can fit and tailor your clothes to your waist, hips, and chest yourself. As most clothes are not made for bold curves, and are too straight in the shape for very curvy bodies.
I do that all the time myself, as a Skittle, and have just accepted it as a part of my clothing routine.

I hope this helped!

I've always had prominent 'hip dips' , and that made it a bit hard for me to decide which i was, but have a decidedly Cello shape down to the small ankle, wrist.. everything gets bigger as you go toward the center;)~

I was happy to find that I've been dressing for my shape rather well! despite not thinking i have much fashion sense.

I'm wondering, are hip dips more common in one shape than another? or are Cellos more likely to have them?
Great little article:) Thank You

hiya!
I need some help i am not sure what shape i am. Sometimes i think i am cello sometimes i think i am a brick!! I have very broad shoulders (it is around 46-47inch around), i am 5ft7.5 my measurements are 47 - 39.5 - 47.5, underbust is around 39- 39.5inches - last time i checked i was a FF Cup size, my waist is shorter (although i initially thought it was long haha), i have very thick thighs and slim calves and ankles. I have large breasts and a large albiet wide butt (doesnt stick out as much as i want!!)

When i add weight i add it all over my body equally including my face however i have a large stomach that droops a bit and i have really big love handles too which kind of swallows up my waist as there isnt that seamline from my hip to waist so my waist doesnt 'look' that defined.
