I was very much enjoying this website though I suggest using more appropriate language than 'tits', thanks.

Hi, Skittle. I am just using the exact language Trinny and Susannah uses in their book (the British styling duo and creators of "The Body Shape Bible"). So, I didn't think it would be offensive to anyone, seeing as they have published their book using that exact frase.

Sorry if it offended you.
Best regards, Idealist Style.

I am so confused about my body shape and I need help to determine which body shape I am. I am overweight for my height but it doesn't look like I am overweight. My shoulders are the same width as my hips, and my waist is a 10.5 difference from my hips. I have a stomach and it does sticks out, but it doesn't stick out a lot like the apple shape and its not as flat as the pear or hourglass stomachs when they gain weight. I have very thick thighs and I also have a medium to large butt with chunky thighs. If you can answer what type of body shape I am, I will be eternally grateful to you!!!

Hi! :-) If you want you can send me some photos of you on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com. It is usually easier to determine the shape visually.

From your information, it could be that you are a skittle. What is your chest size? small, medium, large? And are you calves and lower legs heavy or more slender or balanced compared to your body? Are your shoulders and back broad, narrow or slender? Maybe slender but still matching hips?
A skittle can have a hard time deciding if they are slim or curvy, because they're both. They know they are bottom heavy, and might have considered themselves as being a pear shape, but don't have the saddlebags and the big bum.
The Skittle is characterized by a long slender upper body which gets wider at the middle, and carry most of their weight around the thighs. The top half is in good proportion, but you've probably had some issues with finding clothes that flatter your lower half over the years. The shape is characterized by average boobs, slim waist, ok tummy, big thighs and chunky calves.
Some skittles have shoulders same as hips in width, but is still heavier on the bottom because they have slender shoulders and chest and have curves from below the waist. They can also have more of a stomach than a pear shape, especially if they gain weight or don't work out. They will basically have a harder time keeping it slender from the waist and down. A skinny skittle will still be curvy below the waist even if they are skinny on top. It's just the way they are built. You could say they are elegant on the top, and curvalicious on the bottom.

If you have a large bum and a large chest, I would guess you could be a Cello. A type of hourglass that has less of a small waistline, but more of a difference between hips, chest and waist. The Cello is the boldest of the hourglass types, and is very close to an Hourglass as they are both women with fabulous curves. The Cello waist is also short but not as small, and the figure is on the fuller end of the scale. They might feel a little pear shaped because of their big bottom, but the broad shoulders and big boobs balance it out.
The Cello have large boobs, short waist, big hips, big bottom, big thighs, broad shoulders and slim lower legs.

Finally, you could be a Vase or a Brick too. The Bricks have a slight or no waist, longer legs, small bust and bottom, and usually have broad shoulders, rather thick thighs and calves. It means that your shoulder width is the same as your hip width, without any particularly prominent body area. Although! This shape can come in many sizes and for some the tummy is more prominent, which can lead to a square, masculine look. But, if you look at Eva Longoria, you can see that some Bricks do seem curvy. But instead of an Hourglass curve with a small waist, it's more of a thigh, but and chest thing. If they wear the right shape, they can appear curvy. What makes Eva Longoria a brick is that she still has a Brick like overall look, with a straight waist and all the other Brick qualities. To sum it up, a Brick can also be feminine.
http://www.idealiststyle.com/blog/the-body-type-brick

The Vase is a stretched out Hourglass, and can have a belly too, but then again, so can the Hourglass. What makes the Vase and Hourglass so curvy, is that no matter the size, they will always have a waist that appears small compared to the rest of their body. They will have full chest, hips and buts, and even the really skinny ones will at least have the curvy shape. They will have curvy legs that are less heavy than the bottom heavy types, such as The Skittle, Pear and Bell, or even the straight figured Brick.

my chest size is big, I feel like they are on the more balanced side but that can be due to me working out my calve muslces. I feel like my shoulders are broad but they are more on the slanted side. My shoulders do match my hips. The only thing is my stomach, like its rounded but you can still see my waist and I also have pretty muscular thighs.

Hi, again :-) It does sound like you might be a Cello or a Brick.
The chest size, the but size, the slight belly, the broad shoulders that a balanced to the hips. The difference is the waistline, if it looks like an Hourglass-like shape or if it leans more towards allover straighter Brick-like shape. And finally, a Brick has longer legs, thick thighs and calves. whereas a Cello has thick thighs and slim lower legs.

Which one is the most like you. Some people are just in between types, and you seem to either be a Brick with a little curves in the form of boobs and booty, or a Cello.

Bricks have a slight or no waist, longer legs, small bust and bottom, and usually have broad shoulders, rather thick thighs and calves. It means that your shoulder width is the same as your hip width, without any particularly prominent body area. Although! This shape can come in many sizes and for some the tummy is more prominent, which can lead to a square, masculine look.
Bricks usually find it more difficult to be feminine than many other body types, but it is not impossible. Carefully chosen clothes can bring really good results.

The Cello is very close to an Hourglass as they are both women with fabulous curves.
Supermodel Tara Lynn is a full figured Cello, and anyone should be proud to share her body type.

I also am at a loss of body type. I associate myself as a pear, but i have a massive belly. I have gotten extremely large after having a baby but i never was easily able to define my body. No matter how big ive gotten my body shape has stayed the same.
I just barely have a b size chest (since i was a teenager). I have always had a larger belly that stuck out larger than my chest and was sadly a victim of gravity. I have a long waist. I think i am wider front to back rather than side to side. I have a huge butt and fatty thighs. I might have body dismorphia about my legs. I know they taper off but they feel chunky or... solid. Am i a plus sized skittle?

Hi, Elizabeth :-) You could be a skittle, but I wouldn't say a "plus sized" one. There are no right or wrong sizes for a body type, and no standard size, but more of a type of shape. You coul'd quite possible be a Skittle. If you'd like, you could send me some photos on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com, and I can help you determine that. it's sometimes easier with a visual aid.

From your info, I would say that the description matches a Skittle or a Brick, depending on the distribution of your curves.
I am a Skittle too, and I have some times gained a nice little belly and a good pair of love handles. My middle does get bigger when I gain weight, and so does my bottom half. Also, a little on my upper arms and face. The only thing remaning slender-ish is from my waist and up and my lower arms, so that there is still a bottow heavy look no matter my size. I have sometimes I felt as if I looked a little pregnant (which is a common feeling for a lot of women), so it is possible to have a belly and being a Skittle.
The other type with "chunky" legs, (long waist), and a belly, paired with a smaller sized chest, is a Brick, so I would look into both of those types.

You should always dress to compliment you body. Fashion can't decide what should flatter you, and how you should look in something. If low waisted pants are the new big trend, so be it. I will still wear the type of pants that look good on me.
The moment I realized that I wasn't overweight because of my big hips, ass, and legs, and that It was just my shape, was the moment I started dressing ten times better. I let go of all the clothes that I now know was wrong for me, and found figure flattering pieces that made me feel great (thank you Beyonce and J'Lo for opening up the world to bottom heavy curves). Skittles have great upper bodies for clothes, and a curvy bottom half, and should use their curves to their advantage.
I think any body shape can be beautiful, as long as it's free to be it self.
Just think about Kim Kardashian wearing big bulky clothes when pregnant the first time, vs. figure hugging simple styles the second time. It's always the clothes, never the body.

Hey!
Thank you for all the articles over Skittles!
They actually made me clear aboit my body type.

I wanted to ask whether sleeveless is our thing or not? If yes, what type of sleeveless dresses/tops are suitable?

I am very bad at selecting clothes & end up looking all big & fat everytime.
i would really like to request you to add a few more tips & suggestions for people like me.

Hi, Ayu. As a fellow Skittle, I feel you. I had a lot of the same problems when I was younger and hadn't gotten used to my shape yet. It's so easy to feel big if you don't show of your figure the right way. The Skittle is not one of the stereotype body types one usually hears of, as the quite similar Pear shape is a little different. So, it can be hard to figure out your what works and what doesn't for you. Sleeveless works, absolutely. However, the Skittle has OK arms, not great ones, so capped sleeves is not the best choice. Go for a sleeveless look that shows off your entire shoulder, to highlight the slenderness of the arm, and not focus on what little extra that may have settled on your upper arm. Spaghetti straps are too thin, but a thumb sized strap and up to a full sleeveless look, can work really well. For longer, go for a proper t-shirt sleeve, and longer. Fluted sleves aren't the best look. You want to show off your arms. Basically, show off your slender parts, wear something flared, but not big and bulky over your fuller sized parts, and then you don't have to worry about it.

I think the reason why you might feel big, is that you haven't picked the right silhouette for your shape. A-line skirts and dresses, fitted waists, open necklines, peplum tops, extra elastic skinny jeans paired with a form fitted but loose top, or wide legged pants are the clothes that brings out the best in the Skittle.
Dresses and skirts that are fitted in the waist, flares gently and cuts below the widest part of the lower leg, or maybe a full length, is a safe look for me whenever I don't feel like my legs are having a good day. Paired with elegant, leg-lengthening shoes (pointy tip or rounded pointy tip, not round or square) with a sturdy heal and a somewhat fitted top, I always feel good.

If you look at the "Eco-Express yourself" post, you can see what I look like in different type of clothing. Even some that are not perfect for my Skittle figure, that I use other tricks to get away with. They're all in the link below. I'm the tallest one, with the warm brown hair. The one with very dark hair is a Pear shape. Similar, but not the same.

http://www.idealiststyle.com/fashion-advice.html

Last, but not least. A Skittle needs to accept the fact that they are a curvy body type and embrace that. If you learn to love your bootie, wide hips, full thighs, curvy legs and girly upper body, you will stop feeling big, and realize that you're figure is feminine and strong, and that you have a great waistline. The good news is that this type of bottom heavy figure usually will get less of that unhealthy belly fat with age, and that thigh fat is good for your health and gives you smart children (At least that's what science says). We all have days where we don't feel super hot, but for the most part, dressing your body the right way, should make you feel more balanced and comfortable in your own size.

I hope this helped.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for making things a little clearer in my head, as I've always been at a loss with my body shape. I've always thought I fall more into the pear category, but perhaps I might actually be a skittle!!!

I have wide defined shoulders, very toned arms, small breasts (a 32 A when at my usual weight), slim long torso, flat tummy. Very proportional. The problems start from the waist down! My bum is a fairly rounded African type, with wide hips and upper thighs. I have shapely but chunky calves too.

I usually struggle to find pants/jeans that fit perfectly due to the small waist and much larger bum. I also struggle with dresses because my top half is smaller than my hip area. The width of my shoulders is however the same as my hips. Can you confirm for me what shape I actually am and what clothes I should be buying.

Ta, Londzi. x

Hi, Londzi. I think you do sound like a Skittle/Pear, and the defining difference between the two is mainly about where your widest part in. A Pear has wide, rounded hips, big bum and full thighs, heavy lower legs, chunky calves, all together rounded in a way similar to the round shape of an Hourglass hip and thigh. The Skittle will be quite similar, but the thighs are the fullest part of their figure. Wide hips and bum will be a little bit less dominant compared to thighs. So it's mostly a thigh situation, while the pear has all of it. I think it sounds like you might be a Pear or Skittle with wider that usual shoulders. That would mean that you follow the Pear/Skittle rules, except for the ones regarding widening the shoulders, as they are already somewhat balanced. You are still bottom heavy, because even thought the width is the same, the top part has less muscle and body fat than the lower half, leaving the bottom half as the dominating feature.
I think African body types have a lot in common with Scandinavian ones, as both have more people that are taller than the average person, can have wide shoulders no matter the body type, and have a lot of bottom heavy figures. So, you can still be a Skittle/Pear, only it is genetically more common for you to have shoulders that are a bit more balanced than the stereotype Pear/Skittle. I think that if you see yourself more in the Skittle, that means that that's probably your type. If you need more help to be absolutely sure, you can send me a photo on idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com, and I can help you evaluate which one you're leaning to the most.
In short, buy Skittle clothes/shapes, but don't add extra width to your shoulders, just highlight them instead. Instead of shoulder pads, puffy shoulders, you have to look to the Cornet and Brick for shoulder specific tips, such as broad straps and wide neck openings. Spaghetti-strap tops are bad for the Skittle anyway, so that's double the reason to avoid them. Highlight your great shoulders and how slender that part is, and the same for for curvy and rounded your lower part is. A-line skirts will help balance heavy legs, but still enhance your curves.

I hope this helped.

This blog has helped me know more about my body and what to wear and not wear but I'm still not exactly sure about my body type. I have small A boobs, a long chest and a rectangle-ish little to nothing waist but there's some fat on the lower belly. (It's somewhere around flat at the morning if I ate something light the night before.) My arms are upper and lower arms are slender and my shoulders are slightly larger than my hips. But then from waist down is where it starts getting disproportionate. My thighs are chunky but there's a small diamond gap in the middle and my calves are just chunky. (If height matters then I'm only 5ft.) I have a little dysphoria about my body because of my body type.

Hi, Evan. Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. Makes me happy to hear that these body type posts are of positive use to people.
About your figure. I hope that understanding your body type and that it's just one of many types and therefore completely normal, will help you to feel better about your body. I know it did for me. There is nothing wrong with your body, but there might be wearing things that doesn't do it justice. It's always the clothes, never the body. One size does not fit all, even though society likes us to belive that. Luckily, the world is on it's way to change for the better in the body diversity area.

Small boobs, long upper body, little or no waist, a little french tummy (99,9% of women have those), slender arms, slightly wider shoulders than hips, full thighs and lower legs, and chunky calves.
It can sound like you have Brick figure, like Kate Moss. Do you have long or short legs, do you have a narrow or wide frame (shoulders and hip width)?

The Brick:
Slight or no waist, longer legs, small bust and bottom, and usually broad shoulders, rather thick thighs and calves. Shoulder width is the same as hip width, without any particularly prominent body area. This shape can come in many sizes and for some the tummy is more prominent.

If you feel like the Brick doesn't quite fit either, then if you'd like, you can send me some photos of you (make sure to angle the camera so the proportions come of accurate), to idealiststyledotcom@gmail.com, and then I can help you figure it out more accurately.

Hi, Safia. I think that sounds perfectly normal for a Skittle. A Skittle doesn't always have narrow shoulders, but can be more of a slender shoulders compared to the hips, thighs, and lower legs. I'm the same type of Skittle, and so I just don't add width to my shoulders. The rule about frilly things on your top hald should still work though, as long as it doesn't hide your waist or make your top half disapear. Your measurements also sound like a Skittle, as the chest is not flat and the hips are still wider than shoulders when you measure around. My shoulders are just as wide as my hips when you see me from the front, but I have a lot more meat on my lower half, so it's still wider if you measure around. You could Also Check out the Bell and the Pear. Or maybe even the Vase, but most likely you are a Skittle.

I hope this helped :-)

I would LOVE some help to determine if I fall into the skittle or pear category. I definitely consider myself a "bottom heavy" gal. I am 5'2" and approximately 120 lbs. My bust is 36 (bra size 32D), waist is 26, and hips about 37/38. I have a round bootie, heavy thighs and thick (not muscular) calves.
Thanks so much!
