BODY TYPE APPLE : YOUR BEST LOOKS

Roundness is the defining feature of the Apple body shape. You have average tits, the tummy is bigger than the tits, quite flat bum and ok legs. For the Apple it is all about drawing attention to the best parts.

A bra and some shaping underwear might be the most important items an Apple figure can wear. It will do wonders for how you feel about clothing. The Apple is defined by it's roundness and the right underwear will make sure you give focus to the correct assets, such as the amazing boobs. The Apple is definitely a sexy figure, just look at Supermodel Beth Ditto, and remember to flaunt your curves with as much pride as she does. 
A wide-open neckline is one of your best weapons.
Combining plain and print, or plain and texture breaks up and re-shapes the silhouette (Good for balancing the tummy area). Experiment with colors, textures and patterns. Look to Beth Ditto and Rebel Wilson for inspiration.

Hello, I've really been enjoying your versatile blog, especially the section on colour analysis and the section on body shape. I wonder if I could be an apple with a defined waist? I kinda see myself as a not so pronounced hourglass mixed in with another body shape on the bottom.

In a tight top and pants, I seem a bit top-heavy and my hips seem a bit slimmer than my shoulders, but I can make it look like an hourglass-shape, by wearing pencilskirts, A-line skirts and dresses. My shoulders are straight, but don’t seem to be that wide. My thighs also seem more pronounced than my hips and it makes it hard to find flattering pants. It's not that they're so big, it's more that my hip bones start pretty high under my waist and I'm pretty wide there. But from there my hips tend to slim down, so it seems like my thighs are too big for my seemingly slender hips. My favourite part of my body is definitely my curvy and slender waist, although it’s not so pronounced as an hourglass’s. My least favourite part is my belly, which always seems to stick out (even when I’m not overweight), even though I have a defined waist. My boobs are always in proportion, my legs are curvy and quite slender but my calves are a bit wide. When I’m overweight, my belly seems to rival for attention with my boobs. My arms are always soft and get pretty wide when I’m overweight. I first gain weight on my belly, then on my boobs and back, then on my arms and face and probably lastly on my lower half. My behind is always proportionate, but sometimes seems a bit flat. All in all, I would definitely call myself a bit top-heavy instead of bottom-heavy and more curvy than straight.

I feel like, if my hips would be wider and rounder, I would definitely be a vase, an hourglass or a cello. If I wouldn’t have a defined waist, I would be pretty sure I was an apple. I look pretty good in pencil skirts, but better in figure-hugging dresses, A-line dresses and skirts. I can wear long, straight tops with long cardi's, or tops and dresses that emphasize my waist. Wide tops are horrible on me, because they broaden my top half and make my lower half look even smaller. When I wear wide legged trousers, it seems to make my hips disappear entirely. When I wear straight or skinny jeans, it emphasizes my slim hips and my wider thighs. Looser, straight pants or jeans seems to be the best option, but are still not super flattering. Straight skirts are also not flattering on me. Can you please help me figure this out?

Hi, Nicky! Thank you so much for your lovely feedback.

It sounds like you might be a Cello actually, but that depends on your but, hips, thigs and waist a little bit. From what you're describing, it sounds a little Cello like. Other than that, it also sounds like a Brick, but more of a soft Brick kind of type (Like Jennifer Hudson). These two are both balanced body types with similar width up top to the bottom. My third thought, was a Goblet, as that type will gain weight in the middle too, similar to the Apple. This is a top heavy type. The fact that you have a curvy and slender waist, makes me think that you're not an Apple. The other options to look at, would be the Bell and the Skittle. These are both bottom heavy types, as you mentioned heavy ankles. Doesn't sound quite Pear shape, so the other two are more likely.
Start by checking out these types, and see which ones feel close and which ones that don't. That will give a bit of info as well.

Since you say you feel top heavy, but still balanced, that you do have a little bit of a waist, that you have thighs and wide ankles, it sounds the most like you're a soft Brick. Especially since you feel like you have a belly when you gain weight, but not in an Apple way. A soft Brick is a Brick that's just a bit more curvy. Like you merged a Brick with a Vase, Cello or a Pear, depending on where you're leaning. Brick rules apply, but you can get away with more form fitting styles too.
If Brick isn't a fit, try out one the Goblet and Cello next, and more to the bottom heavy Skittle and Bell last. These are only added since you mentioned wide ankles, but a Brick has those too, and so it's not very likely you're these two types as everything above speaks in favour of a balanced or top heavy type.

I'm listing the top three types one more time in the order I think is more likely for you to be one of them.
1. Brick
2. Goblet
3. Cello

I'm working on adding more varieties of each body type to the system, so that it will be easier to find yourself, no matter the size, but it's going to take a while to finish.

Hi Sun,

Sorry for my late response, but I was waiting for a notification if there was a reply to my post! Anyways, thank you for your feedback! Jennifer Hudson has an amazing figure for sure. It sounds like the brick could be right, although my bust and behind are in proportion with my thighs. I think it's very possible I'm a balanced type, since I can look either top heavy or bottom heavy at different times. Basically, everything about my body is in proportion, except my thighs in comparison to my hips and then my stomach. To be honest, the skittle sounds like a good contender as well. My legs definitely don't seem longer than my waist and my upper body does get wider underneath my waist, above my hip bones. My bottom is also very present, but also proportionate and definitely less flat if I work out. I notice that I gain muscle mass much faster on my bottom half. Finding flattering jeans or trousers has always been a nightmare. It sounds like a good idea to wear a top that flares out with jeans or a long enough top that hides my thighs a bit. I will also opt more for high waisted pants. Thank you so much for your help :-)

What you're describing sounds mostly like a softer Brick, so I think you're on the right track. the Skittle is not completely ruled out, since that description also fit well. A Skittle will just not feel to heavy, and the am I a Pear or a top heavy look, is more of a soft Brick kind of dilemma. Many Bricks who work out will also get solid thigh muscle, so it all fits really well. Keep trying these two types out, and see which one feels right. Sometimes time and letting it sink in will help a lot to better see it clearly.

I feel like my figure doesn't quite fit any of the normal classifications! I am currently a 34-33-40, meaning I have the tummy of an apple but the breasts of an I don't know what! Apple suggestions seem to all be about women with ample breasts. I know some of your suggestions here will work for me because I already have similar items, but would you suggest playing up my bust as much as possible for balance? Thank you.

Hi, Rebecca! It sounds like you could be an Apple, or maybe a Brick. As I understand it it sounds like you're saying you have a small chest, also compared to your tummy? If so, that sounds right. Most Apples usually have larger tummies than their chest, so chest size can come in all sizes actually.

If you have a large chest or large shoulders, I would check out the Goblet or Cornet. If you have small-fish chest compared to your body, but wider hips, check out the Bell, Pear and Skittle. Most bodies will get some kind of tummy in lots or variations once they go over a certain weight point compared to their size. So, a tummy won't always mean Apple. Look at your legs, shoulders, waist, hips, and so on and try to look big picture instead of details. Your measurements says your a little straight with wider hips, so check out the other types. You can even consider being a fuller size Column. What it all comes down to, is which clothes flatter you. Size doesn't matter in body types.

As it sounds like you have a small chest, a tummy, and hips doesn't seem that narrow, I think your best bet is Apple or Brick. Then look at the Column, Skittle, Bell and Pear, just to be sure.

About the playing up your chest thing, I say yes to that. Highlighting your chest can also highlight and balance your waist area, which is for many straighter types, directly under your chest. So that's a good plan for showing of your figure.

My stomach sticks out pass my boobs and my hips are small. I don't know what to wear anymore

Hi, Deb! The short answer is to wear the clothing styles that suit your shape. The long answer is, that it sounds like you might have a problem with how you look and that can't be as easily fixed with clothes. As if you don't accept your body you will try to hide it instead of highlighting your best bits. And so as there are bikinis for every body type too, dressing for your body type is not about hiding, but rather to find clothes that fit you right. Or create the effect you want.

I think the first step is to find what you like about yourself, like for example if you have killer legs, and flaunt them. Focus your outfit around your great legs. Focus on what you like about yourself, and try to find some models or actresses that have a similar body to yours, that you like the look of or the style off. That will help you see that your body is good enough the way it is, and that all bodies are beautiful and can have great style. We just happen to live in an era when thin is everything, and so it tricks us to think that that' s the only good look. I have seen many ladies with bodies similar to what you describe that are super beautiful, attractive, and have great style. So, don't let society trick you into believing that you're not good enough. Through out history there has been many different ideals, and large bellies has also been one of those ideals that people aspired to.
I'm very tall, and have curves, and so I always felt very big. And up until plus size models became accepted as equally beautiful, I did not have a body type that was accepted. I can't even tell you how many times I've gotten diet advice from strangers, even at my perfectly normal for my body type weight. Because no one could understand that my thick legs were just like that. And can't be thin. When I was younger I dreamt about shoes that would make me sink into the group enough to look smaller and have a normal girl height. But then I discovered some actresses and models that were tall and curvy like me, and I realized that they looked great. And every time I start to feel like big is bad again. As occasionally some guy will yell. WOW! You're tall! or you're huge or something. Because men have the opposite problem. They're self conscious about being short or small. (I'm almost 6 feet/182cm). However, other short guys flirt with me, so it's really about them and not me, and not my job to be what they want. As I'm good enough the way I am. Back to the point! Whenever I start feeling like big is bad, I think about how these tall and bigger ladies I've seen look perfect, and that makes me proud to be just as I am. Also that it's not me theres anything wrong with, but the idea that women have to be petite in some way, to be accepted. The especially messed up thing is that real life people accept all shapes and sizes, and that it's really magazines, tv, movies, ad campains, and so on that makes us think that only one or two body types is the norm, and anyone not like that can't be worthy. They do this by mostly only representing a certain look as the main protagonist. And bad self esteem sells way more product, than if people like themselves. Which is literally why the word cellulite was invented in the 40's. It was invented by ad companies to sell more products. They created a problem that wasn't there before, so they could sell products to fix it. Before that is was just a part of you body. There are lots of ads built on shaming the female body to think we needed something to fix ourselves and be attractive. So, it's no wonder women feel insecure or bad about their bodies, after 80 years of ads that tell us to be just that.

This became a very long response, but as I had little information to go on and help you with. I just thought I'd share why I think you feel that way, and what could help other than wearing Apple body type styles. As I know people with your body type who love dressing up and feel great in clothes. So, I know it's possible for you too, and that it sounds like your problem has to be fixed on the inside too. However, figuring out what suits you and what you feel good in, always help with liking the way you feel about your body in clothes.
